         First edition. Dedicated to Thomas Hanbury of La Mortola. An illustrated and well indexed natural history study of the region of particular interest to students of Riviera gardens. Casey, who spent twelve summers in the area, begins his study with a general description of the flora of the region and proceeds with chapters on individual plants such as the pine tree, the carob, the olive, plants common to both the Riviera and the Bible, the pistacias, gourds and pumpkins,euphorbias, date palms, arbutus and erica ,perfumed plants, citrus plants, etc. Plant lore, local customs and the notice of certain plants in specific gardens form a significant part of each chapter. The first edition is scarce in good condition.   8vo (17.7 x 12 cm); xx + (9)- 373 + iii + 30 illustrations (6 hors texte) from photographs or drawings.  
         Original cloth with blind-stamped panels on upper and lower covers, gilt titling on upper cover and spine; decorative endapers; neat pencil marks to items in index, but a very good copy.
