The rose garden at Lord Brougham's Villa Eleonore was planned in 1865 by the noted horticulturist and gardener, Gilbert Nabonnand, after whom a number of the varieties in this list are named. Brougham's brief introductory essay on the conditions for rose growing in the Riviera precedes the listing of over 200 roses described in "appearance, colour, general habits, and behaviour." Dates of introduction and originators are noted.
