(ca 1896). First edition. The author was the nephew of Rose-Joseph Lemercier, the most prominent and innovative French lithographer of the 19th century. Alfred joined his uncle and father as a partner in the family printing firm during the 1850s and eventually took over as its head. The present work is both a comprehensive history of the development of lithography in France during its first century and a technical manual for the varied techniques and processes described. The subjects covered include all aspects of artistic and commercial lithography, l'autographie, chromolithography, photolithography, phototypography and heliogravure, as well the various papers, inks, crayons, brushes, presses and other tools employed.
