Eugène POUBELLE) LES TRAVAUX DE PARIS. 1789 -
1889. Atlas Dressé Sous L'Administration de M. E.
Poubelle, Préfet De La Seine, Sous La Direction De M. A.
Alphand, Inspecteur Général Des Ponts Et
Chaussées, Directeur Des Travaux De Paris...
Paris: Imprimerie Nationale, 1889. This large folio volume, published by the city of Paris, is essentially an atlas of the important civic improvements completed in Paris over the course of the 19th century. Sixteen double-page plates are included. These begin with a map showing the city as it existed in 1789. The next eight schematic plans show the progressive expansion of the city water and sewer systems. These are followed by five maps representing the alteration and expansion of the Parisian system of streets and boulevards. The first of these is actually a reconstruction based on the recommendations of the Commission des artistes made in 1793. The next three show the alterations made during the periods 1789-1853, 1854-1870, and 1871-1889. The alterations made during each period are clearly marked, and the dates of completion are noted alongside each new road. There is a map which shows the type of surfacing material used for all the streets in Paris in 1889. Another shows all the public transportation (buses, tramways and trains) within the city, while the final map locates all the public buildings (including universities) erected in Paris between 1871 and 1889, along with their date of completion. The entire work is graphic testimony to the enormous physical transformation carried out in Paris during the century that followed the French revolution. Folio (67.5 x 45 cm); 4 ff + 16 color double-page lithographic plans. Original cloth with leather spine; leather scuffed; covers and end sheets lightly soiled; silverfishing in margins of text leaves, but plates are clean with only occasional light foxing. $1,250.00
