(Italian Riviera) CICALA, Vittorio   VILLE E CASTELLI D'ITALIA   Riviera - Ligure.    Torino & Rome: "Itala Ars,"   (1917).
A photographic survey of villa architecture along the Italian Riviera. Fifty-four villas are featured in a geographical progression stretching from Bordighera and San Remo to Santa Margherita and Rapallo, twenty-two of them located in the first two towns. A few older villas are included, but the overwhelming majority are of recent design with the architects credited. A few of the villas had significant gardens, and these are also photographed. Among these are: the Villa Ernesto Marsaglia, Villa La Perla, Villa Silvia and the Castello Vicenzo Marsaglia in San Remo; the Villa Pallavicini in Pegli; and the Villa Croce in Nervi. The work was originally issued loose in portfolios, but the present edition was issued bound with a new imprint label pasted over the original Milan imprint.   Folio (32.7 x 23.5 cm); 214 ff. with 158 gravure plates from photographs; a separate leaf of letterpress giving the name, location and architect appears before the plate(s) for each individual villa.
Contemporary three quarter calf with raised spine bands and gilt spine lettering, cloth over boards, scuffed; infrequent thumb soiling to text margins only; a few plates (4 or 5) printed with blurred impressions; the leaf of letterpress preceding plates 27-32 (Villa Ernest Marsaglia, San Remo) has been left unprinted in this copy.
