         First edition. George Lindley was a Norfolk nurseryman "who had been working on 'a complete account of the fruit trees' for nearly 40 years. A GUIDE TO THE ORCHARD AND KITCHEN GARDEN is a 600-page work with exact information on hundreds of cultivars..." (-Janson. POMONA'S HARVEST, p. 306). George was the father of John Lindley, the noted botanist, who also edited this volume. The work was influential in the United States, having been quoted in William Prince's POMOLOGICAL MANUAL of 1831, and was actually published in America in 1833 (Janson p. 186).   8vo (21.7 x 13.7 cm); xxxi + (I) + 601 + (1) pp..  
         Attractively bound in later full green calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt tooled spine panels, gilt ruled upper and lower covers; marbled end papers and marbled edges; bookplate of Sir Thomas Neame; some wear and slight splitting of leather along outer spine edge, but hinge firm; slight bumping and wear to corners; in all, a nice copy.
