BARRY, P(atrick). and J. Jay SMITH
(editors). THE HORTICULTURIST AND JOURNAL OF RURAL ART
AND RURAL TASTE. Devoted To Horticulture, Landscape
Gardening, Rural Architecture, Botany, Pomology, Entomology, Rural
Economy, Etc. New Series, Vol. V. January to December, 1855.
Philadelphia: Robert Pearsall Smith, 1855. Of the twelve color lithographs in this number of the journal, at least 7 can be attributed to Prestele (or his son) based upon comparisons with illustrations or lists in DRAWN FROM NATURE; 1 resembles the other Presteles in style. Initially Patrick Barry, and, later, both Barry and J. Jay Smith took over as editors of THE HORTICULTURIST after Downing's death in 1852. Smith alone continued on as editor, under different publishers, until 1860 (see Hedrick p. 496). This volume from 1855 represents the last year of Prestele's association with THE HORTICULTURIST. Half way through the year the publication was moved to Philadelphia under the new publisher. (Van Ravenswaay p. 74). 8vo (23.8 x 16.2 cm.); 582 + (ii) pp. with engraved text illustrations + 18 plates of which 12 are colored lithographs and 1 is folding. Contemporary three quarter green calf, gilt ruled and lettered spine, marbled boards, exterior hinges partially cracked, tears to spine leather repaired; scuffed; infrequent scattered foxing, light to moderate foxing on three color plates. $350.00
