BARRY, P(atrick). THE
HORTICULTURIST AND JOURNAL OF RURAL ART AND RURAL TASTE.
Devoted To Horticulture, Landscape Gardening, Rural Architecture,
Botany, Pomology, Entomology, Rural Economy, Etc. New Series, Vol. V.
January to December, 1853. Rochester:
James Vick, Jr., 1853. One of the rare copies issued with color plates, the majority of which were printed by the innovative and versatile immigrant flower painter and lithographer Joseph Prestele. It was through James Vick that Prestele's association with THE HORTICULTURIST first began. When Vick took over as publisher of the journal after the death of its founder Andrew Jackson Downing, he offered copies to subscribers with a choice of colored or uncolored plates. "Vick obtained his engravings from many different sources. Some had already been published elsewhere, and most of these have the signatures of their artists and engravers. Vick also published some twenty-four plates engraved on stone and four drawn in "chalk" on stone which can be attributed to Joseph Prestele on the basis of lithographic techniques used, the design style and the captions." (Van Ravenswaay, DRAWN FROM NATURE p. 73). Of the twelve color lithographs in this number of the journal, at least 5 can be attributed to Prestele when compared to illustrations or lists in DRAWN FROM NATURE; 4 are also possibly Prestele, based on references in the list, and one more resembles the other Presteles in style. Patrick Barry and later both Barry and J.Jay Smith took over as editors of THE HORTICULTURIST after Andrew Jackson Downing's death in 1852. Smith alone continued on as editor until 1860 (see Hedrick p. 496). 8vo (23.8 x 16.2 cm); 576 pp. with text illustrations + 7 uncolored engraved plates. + 12 color lithograph plates. Contemporary three quarter green calf, gilt ruled spine and gilt lettered spine label, marbled boards, hinges partially cracked, heavily scuffed spine leather reglued at various tears, but showing splits and wear; early Canadian bookseller's ticket on front paste down, scattered light foxing, plates generally bright with occasional very faint to mild foxing scattered on some of the plates and the occasional oxidation or offsetting from an opposite page. $300.00
