L'HERBORISTE-BOTANISTE PRÉPARATEUR, Contenant La
Description Des Planches Médicinales, La Manière De Les

Dans La Thérapeutique. Paris: Au
Dépot Des Manuels Progressifs, 1837. A practical manual on the medicinal use of plants. Piton defines an "herboriste" as one who sells dried or fresh medicinal plants in a shop or who goes into the countryside collecting plants for healing. He details instructions for plant collecting similar to those for botanizing. Definitions of plant parts are given, as are instructions for collection and drying. There is a descriptive alphabetized listing of medicinal plants, instruction for preparing medicines from plants, and receipts for restorative wines, tinctures, etc. An engraving of an herbalist at work in his shop serves as frontispiece. OCLC locates only the NYBG copy. 12mo (13.6 x 8.5 cm); engraved frontispiece + 268 pp. Later calf-backed marbled boards, all edges marbled; excellent condition but for one small tear on pp. 91-92 which causes minor loss of lettering but does not obscure the meaning of the text. $120.00
