40          (DESCEMET, Pierre)   CATALOGUE DES PLANTES DU JARDIN DE Mrs. LES APOTICAIRES DE PARIS.   Suivant Leurs Genres & Les Caracteres Des Fleurs, Conformément A La Méthode De Monsieur Tournefort Dan Son Edition Françoise de 1694.    (Paris:)   1741.
First edition. This is a complete catalogue of the plants growing in the Jardin Des Apothicaires in Paris in 1741. In addition to being a major source of medicinal plants in the city, this important Parisian physic garden, whose origins dated to the late 16th century, was used extensively by medical students and botanists for the study of plants and herbs. The printed catalogue was compiled specifically as a guide for those students and was sold at the gardens for their use. The listings provide Latin and common (French) names classified according to the system of Tournefort, then in use by the apothecaries. The entries include Latin and common names together with, in most cases, citations of listings in earlier botanical works and brief notations regarding the primary medicinal properties of the listed plant. Jean Descemet, the famous Parisian physician, is often incorrectly cited as the author of this work. The correct attribution is to Pierre Descemet, who ran the gardens for many years before his death in 1762 or 1763. His son, Jacques-Louis, succeeded him. (For a lengthy account of the gardens see: Constans, Martine, ed., JARDINER A PARIS AU TEMPS DES ROIS pp. 209-216)   8vo (18.3 x 11.7 cm); 100 + (4) pp.   Pritzel 2168; Cleveland 395.
Recently rebound in marbled boards with leather spine label.

41          (DEZALLIER D'ARGENVILLE, A. J.) DANREITER, Franz Anton (translator). Augsburg: Johann Andreas Pfeffel,   1753.
Second German edition, translated by Franz Anton Danreiter. This edition is complete with the full complement of 39 plates, including frontispiece. Dezallier's LA THEORIE ET LA PRATIQUE DU JARDINAGE was first published in French in 1709 and then reprinted and enlarged in several later editions. It effectively codified the design principles of the French formal garden as established by LeNôtre and continued in print for nearly three-quarters of the eighteenth century. "France did not become mistress of Europe in garden art merely because of such of her examples as could be copied; of almost equal importance was the wide popularity of a book which first appeared anonymously in France in 1709 under the title THEORIE ET PRATIQUE DU JARDINAGE... Never before did a book lay down the principles of any style so surely and so intelligibly in instructive precepts." (Gothein, HISTORY OF GARDEN ART, volume II, pg 111). The most prominent Germanic exponent of the French formal style was the Austrian F. A. Danreiter, who spent several years in France in the 1720s before returning to Salzburg, where he spent the remainder of his career serving as Garden Director of the major gardens there. Danreiter's translation of Dezallier, first published in 1731, was the single most important source for the spread of the French formal style across German-speaking Europe during the eighteenth century. While the title page of this edition calls for only 33 plates, the present copy includes a full set of 39 plates. The plate count varies among different copies of this work, even within the same edition, with many copies having either 33 or 35 plates. Copies with all 39 plates are uncommon.   8vo (18 x 11.5 cm); folding title + (vii) + 368 + (2) pp. + 38 folding engraved plates + engraved frontispiece.   Berlin Cat 3464 (1731 ed); Springer pg. 37.
Contemporary paper-covered boards, spine worn; text clean and tight; generally a well-preserved copy.

43          (DUNN, attributed to).   A DESCRIPTION OF KILLARNEY.      London: Printed For J. Dodsley,   1776.
This early picturesque guide to the scenery of the lakes and mountains of Killarney, Ireland, is especially notable for its evidence of formalized interest in picturesque travel several years before the publications of Gilpin and other popularizers of the Picturesque Tour. Unlike most prior published works on similar subjects, generally written by literary travelers after passing through the wilder scenery of mountain districts and observing them from an aesthetic point of view (Thomas Gray, for example), the text here is not a personal narrative of a particular trip, but an actual guide compiled for the benefit of other visitors who might travel to the area specifically to view its natural beauty. Halkett and Laing attribute the anonymous work to a Mr. Dunn, but we can find nothing else regarding his identity. His interest in Killarney derives almost entirely from its scenic values, and he opens the work with claims for the superiority of written description over pictorial representation in conveying these subjects to the imagination. "Resolving these advantages of the descriptive method, over the mere plastic, I wished to prove its excellence by an example; and meeting with a subject altogether engaging, I made the following attempt to exhibit it in its true colours. I inscribe it to the Academy of Royal Artists, as a poor atonement for my presumptuous encroachment upon the province of the picture." His methodical description, which refers regularly to a keyed map printed at the center of the title page, is divided into three sections. The first describes individually all the mountains, rivers and bays surrounding and feeding into the two lakes at the center of the region. In the second he describes the several islands within the lakes. It is in the final section, however, that the author's picturesque intent is most revealed. After having filled in the pictorial details of the district in the first two parts, this third part singles out ten distinct locations from which the most impressive and picturesque views of them may be obtained. Many of these are located high upon the surrounding mountains. Each is evaluated for its aesthetic merits and defaults. The wildness and irregular ridges viewed from Mount Mangerton are praised equally with the unstudied regularity of the view from Yellow Mountain over Lough Lane. The picturesque interest of Killarney was clearly equal to that of the more famous and accessible Lake District of England. The latter is generally regarded as the earliest British destination for picturesque travelers. In 1778 Thomas West published A GUIDE TO THE LAKES, and that work is often cited as "the earliest guide to picturesque mountain scenery" (see Bicknell, THE PICTURESQUE SCENERY OF THE LAKE DISTRICT). The present work obviously pre-dates West's guide, however, and may, in fact, be the earliest such guide published in Britain. Another edition, in smaller format, was published in Dublin in the same year, but we would presume that Dodsley's London printing is the first edition and that the Dublin printing was a pirated version.   4to (24.2 x 19 cm); (iv) + 50 + (2) pp. with engraved map on title and engraved landscape view printed on final leaf.
Later quarter cloth with paper-covered boards; damp stain in gutter on final two leaves.

45     (Ermenonville)     THIÉBAUT (DE BERNEAUD), Arsenne.   VOYAGE A L'ISLE DES PEUPLIERS.      Paris: Lepetit, AN VII   (1798).
First edition. The Isle des Peupliers is the picturesque island in the park at Ermenonville on which stood the tomb of Jean Jacques Rousseau. The creator and owner of the park, the Marquis René-Louis de Girardin, was among Rousseau's most ardent admirers. LA NOUVELLE HÉLOISE had provided much of his inspiration for the design of his gardens, and the poplar shrouded island at its center had been erected as a monument to the philosopher well before he arrived there to spend his final days. Both as the resting place for Rousseau's remains and as the perfect expression of his philosophy of nature transformed to the physical landscape, Ermenonville became a destination for Romantic pilgrims from across Europe. Thiébaut was among the most enthusiastic of those pilgrims. His effusive account is a first person narrative of a visit to Ermenonville. He recounts all the sites he encounters in the park together with the associations and emotions they evoke. But in spite of its sentimental and intensely personal tone, the book seems to have been regularly used by other later pilgrims who carried it with them as a guide. In 1819 Thiébaut published a similar book entitled VOYAGE A ERMENONVILLE. That book shows far less of the youthful enthusiasm expressed here and is much closer in character to other garden guide books of the period.   12mo (14.2 x 9.2 cm); 173 pp. + 4 engraved plates.   Ganay 139.
Contemporary plain paper wrapper, soiled and lightly frayed at edges; title and a few leaves lightly soiled; publisher's ads used for rear end sheets; there are no front end sheets, resulting in the inner edge of the back of the frontispiece becoming glued to the gutter of the front wrapper.

50          FORESTIER, J. C. N.   JARDINS.   Carnet De Plans Et De Dessins.    Paris: Émile Paul,   (1920).
First Edition. Forestier was the most important and influential French landscape architect of his generation. His adaptation of formalism and the use of garden geometry, combined with an imaginative and sensitive use of plant material, represented a transition from the institutionalized style of Alphand and André (for whom he first worked) to the modernist cubist gardens of the Exposition of 1925 (whose landscape section he supervised). Forestier was also a brilliant draftsman, and the garden plans and renderings which illustrate his book have a distinctive appeal all their own. A few designs for imaginary gardens are included, but the majority are plans for actual sites, chiefly in the Mediterranean areas of Spain, but also in Casablanca, Havana and the southwest of France.   4to (32.2 x 25.4 cm); (240) pp. unpaginated, profusely illustrated with drawings and plans.
Recently bound in half cloth with marbled paper over boards and leather spine label.

52          GEITNER, G(ustav)..   WEGWEISER DURCH DIE TREIBEGÄRTNEREI & BAUMSCHULE   zu Planitz bei Zwickau in Sachsen.    Neusalza: Louis Oeser, n.d. (ca.   1862).
An illustrated guide book to a German nursery founded in 1837. The unusual feature of the nursery, and the critical factor in its establishment, was its location above a burning coal seam in southern Saxony. The heat generated by this underground combustion made the location ideal for use as a forcing garden. In addition to providing a descriptive tour of the garden, the text also includes chapters devoted to its history and unusual geology. The guide is also illustrated with seven colored plates, including two folding plans and two views of the two main sites. Rare; OCLC records no copies, KVK locates only two copies.   8vo (22.5 x 15.5 cm); (iv) + 3-31 pp. + 7 colored lithographic plates (2 folding).
Original chromolithographed paper wraps, worn, with 5 cm section of paper perished from spine; damp stain in lower corner of text and plates.

LE BON JARDINIER was first published in 1755 as a small manual on general gardening practice organized mostly in the form of a gardener's calendar. It was continually reprinted, revised and enlarged, appearing in over 150 different editions and remaining in print to this day. De Grace was largely responsible for expanding the work well beyond its origins as a gardener's almanach and making it into a comprehensive horticultural manual. The text for the present edition was completely revised and enlarged sometime after 1784 and includes, among other changes, the addition of Linnean names for plants which had hitherto been listed with their French names only. Appended to the main text are two supplements for the years 1790, and 1791. Scarce; No copy of this or any earlier editions listed in OCLC.   12mo (12.2 x 6.8 cm); xxiv + 538 pp.

58          HOOPER, E(dward). J(ames).   HOOPER'S WESTERN FRUIT BOOK:   A Compendious Collection Of Facts, From The Notes And Experience Of Successful Fruit Culturists, Arranged For Practical Use In The Orchard And Garden.    Cincinnati: Moore, Wilstach, Keys & Co.,   1857.
First edition. "In all parts of the West, in the middle of the nineteenth century, what was written in Hooper was the final word." (-Hedrick, A HISTORY OF HORTICULTURE IN AMERICA, pg. 493). The bulk of the text is devoted to detailed descriptions and evaluations of proven varieties in most categories of fruit, from apples to gooseberries. Nearly two-thirds of the entries are for apples or pears. Hooper's particular intention was to rely on "the authentic experience of actual cultivators," to produce a list focused on proven varieties "unincumbered with useless descriptions of worthless varieties." Particular emphasis is placed on the experience of growers in the "Middle and North-Western" states. Hooper was himself an experienced grower, but had also previously served as editor of the "Western Farmer and Gardener," putting him in regular contact with a wide variety of western growers. He was also an influential member of the important circle of horticulturists forming the Cincinnati Horticultural Society (many of whom are pictured in the group portrait which serves as a frontispiece). The volume is illustrated with four color plates signed by "Middleton, Wallace & Co,, Cin. O.", and with plans for a summer fruit house prepared by John C. Schooley.   8vo (19 x 12.5 cm); 4 ff. + x + (11)-333 pp. (+ 3 pp. ads) with six woodcut illustrations (summer fruit house) + lithographed frontispiece and 4 colored lithographed plates.
Original embossed cloth; lightly worn at extremities; spine dull; sporadic foxing.

60     (Indian Flowers)     ALLEN, Mrs.   THE VIEWS AND FLOWERS FROM GUZERAT AND RAJPOOTANA.   Dedicated, by permission to The Viscount and Viscountess Falkland.    London: Paul Jerrard, n.d.(ca.   1860).
A scarce and appealing color plate gift book depicting the native flowers and familiar scenery of colonial India. The author's husband, the Rev. G. L. Allen, was a chaplain in the region around Deesa and Mount Aboo. Mrs. Allen's text, printed in red, alternatively describes exotic Indian flowering plants and significant local sites that would have been of interest to British travellers, but of greatest interest are the vibrant hand colored lithographic plates which illustrate these subjects. The botanical plates consist of a floral spray frontispiece, "Mountain Ebony or Banhinia," "Karbee/WildFlower," "White Elephant creeper and yellow hibiscus," "The Jungle Tree, Torri and Iron Tree," "The Jungle Tree, Seymal and Wild Pomegranate," and "The Ink Tree & Stramonium." Each of these illustrations are rendered in strong but delicately applied color and often show an appropriate indigenous insect or butterfly in the composition. The six plates of scenery present views ranging from that of the "Aboo Lawrence School" to the "Shah Baugh or Royal Garden." The volume, typical of the popular decorative gift books published by Paul Jarrard, is an epitome of the Victorian English taste, both esthetically and in its joined subjects: empire and flowers.   Quarto (27 x 18.5 cm); 15 ff. including hand-colored lithographed frontispiece, 12 color plates, text printed in red + 1 page of publisher's ads printed in gilt.
Original decorative green cloth with gilt Indian motif and floral design and gilt title lettering on upper cover, lightly soiled and rubbed at extremities, spine ends gently worn; internally tight as well as fresh and bright.

63          LA QUINTINYE, (Jean-Baptiste de)   INSTRUCTION POUR LES JARDINS FRUITIERS ET POTAGERS,   Avec Un Traité Des Orangers, Suivy de Quelques Réflexions Sur L'Agriculture.    Paris: Claude Barbin,   1690.
First edition of what must be regarded as the most influential book in the history of pomology. Although trained as a lawyer, a visit to the gardens of Italy in 1656 while serving as tutor to the son of Jean Tombonneau produced in La Quinitinie an interest in horticulture which he pursued upon his return to France. His genius was readily recognized by a series of wealthy employers, including the Prince de Condé at Chantilly and Colbert at Sceaux. He also worked alongside Le Notre in creating the jardin potager for Fouquet at Vaux-le-Vicomte, and when the envious Louis XIV put Fouquet in jail and seized Vaux for himself, La Quintinie was sent with Le Notre to Versailles. After first taking charge of the old fruit and vegetable gardens there he designed and oversaw the construction of the new Potager du Roi between 1677 and 1683. It survives very much intact to this day. La Quintinie traveled to Italy and England to study the state of horticulture in those countries. In England he visited Evelyn and reputedly refused an offer from Charles II to take charge of the royal gardens there. La Quintinie was particularly famous for producing fruits and vegetables out of season. He conducted numerous experiments toward this end and did much to perfect the art of forcing. His INSTRUCTION POUR LES JARDINS FRUITIERS ET POTAGERS offers an instructive treatise based on the results of these experiments and discoveries. He made extensive use of espalier planting at Versailles, a new technique introduced to him by Arnauld D'Andilly. His careful observations on this new practice, along with engraved illustrations, are included here, along with his directions for significant new techniques in pruning and grafting. In addition to his practical instructions there is a detailed description of the gardens at the Potager du Roi accompanied by a folding engraved plan. A comprehensive 68 page dictionary of French horticultural terms is provided (the earliest such dictionary we are aware of) and this alone makes the book invaluable to the study of early gardening practices in France. The work's authority was immediately recognized. A pirated edition appeared in Amsterdam within two years, followed by numerous other reprints in Paris, Amsterdam and elsewhere. John Evelyn wrote a translation which appeared in London in 1693, and others freely plagiarized or adapted the text throughout the 18th century. In spite of its immediate success the first edition is notoriously rare. It was not a book destined to sit unused on the shelf and thus very few copies have survived complete in their original bindings. OCLC locates only four American libraries with copies, which is a remarkably small census for a book of such long established importance. It is not found in the Hunt Catalogue (which does include several later editions and translations) nor is it listed in Musset-Pathay (which cites a later edition only), Plesch MILLE ET UN LIVRES, or Cleveland. The Oak Spring copy is incomplete.   Two volumes, 4to (25.3 x 18.2 cm); (iv) + 522 + (2), 568 pp. with nine engraved vignettes and three garden plans + frontispiece portrait + folding garden plan + 12 plates of tools and pruning methods.   Oak Spring Pomona #1 (incomplete); Pritzel 5075.
Contemporary full mottled calf; tips worn, spine nicked, and short split on lower joint of volume one; occasional mild browning of text; but overall a relatively well preserved copy in its original binding.

64          LAAR, C. van.   MAGAZIJN VAN TUIN-SIERADEN;   Of Verzameling Van Modellen Van Aanleg En Sieraad, Voor Groote En Kleine Lust-Hoven, Voornamelijk Van Dezulke Die, Met Weinig Kosten, Te Maken Zijn. Getrokken Uit De Voornaamste Buitenlandsche Werken, Naar De Gelegenheid En Gronden Van Dit Koningrijk Gewijzigd, En Met Vele Nieuwe Platte Gronden En Sieraden Vermeerderd... Nieuwe Uitgave.    Te Zalt-Bommel: Johannes Noman en Zoon, n.d. (ca   1819).
As the fashion for picturesque gardens in the anglo-chinois style spread to the bourgeoisie at the turn of the 19th century, a variety of pattern books began to appear that offered a broad array of designs for exotic garden structures and "fabriques" suitable for copying by any reasonably prosperous garden owner wishing to be thoroughly up-to-date. Of these, van Laar's MAGAZIJN VAN TUIN-SIERADEN (Repository of Garden Ornament) was the largest and most successful. First published in 1802, with 120 plates, by the Dutch nurseryman Gijsbert van Laar, it was ultimately enlarged to the 190 plates included in the edition presented here. These depict a stunning variety of garden ornament, from thatched huts to classical temples, and chinese boats to rustic benches. Virtually every type of exotic decoration that might have been used in the gardens of the day finds some representation in this ambitious compilation. There is even a series of garden plans. All the plates are carefully hand colored and accompanied by a lengthy descriptive text which provides details on the materials and construction of the objects shown. The work had a wide audience and was undoubtedly a standard reference on the shelf of many professional gardeners and local architects. Surviving copies, though not uncommon, are usually thumb-soiled and worn.   4to (26.8 x 21.5 cm); engraved title with colored vignette + iv + viii + 100 pp. + 190 hand colored engraved plates.   Berlin Catalogue 436.
Mid-nineteenth century half morocco over marbled boards with raised bands and decoratively gilt spine; a fine clean copy. The coloring of the plates in this copy is neat and subtle, in contrast to the crude and garish colouring often found in other copies.

65     (Language of Flowers)     DUBOS, E. Constant.   LES FLEURS, IDYLLES, SUIVIES DE POÉSIES DIVERSES;      Paris: Chez P.E. Janet,   1817.
A lovely little work on floral symbolism, illustrated with hand-colored plates and published in the diminutive format typical of the French gift books and almanachs des dames of this period. A version without color plates first appeared in 1808. It was a precursor to the popular genre of books on the language of flowers. The enormous interest in floral symbolism, however, did not begin, as a publishing phenomenon at least, until after the Napoleonic Wars. At that point pocket-size books embellished with delicate color plates discussing the meaning and sentiment of flowers became highly fashionable. That Dubos' earlier work was highly suited to that new taste must have been apparent to the Parisian publisher Janet, who had long specialized in ladies' almanacs and decorative gift books. He reissued it, this time in a new smaller format and embellished with color plates, to capitalize on the new vogue. The text of the volume presents fifteen poems on various flowers. Horticultural and historical information accompanies each poem, together with references to other poets. The anonymous hand-colored plates are an interesting study. Aside from being extremely pretty, they could serve as examples of period flower arrangement and of taste in vases and containers. Two plates show plants growing from the ground or landscape, but the rest show arrangements of two flowers in a decorative vase or cache-pot set upon a table or pedestal with brass or gold ornamentation. Second edition, first published in 1808 without the colored plates.   12mo (12.5 x 8 cm); xxi + (1) 243 + (1) pp. + 9 hand-colored engraved plates with guard sheets.   Dunthorne 97, this edition, noting a similarity to Bessa's illustrations for Malo; Gumachian 2282.
Original ivory moiré patterned paper over boards, a.e.g. some minor foxing and some soiling to preliminary and rear pages, but largely unblemished; color plates fresh and bright; in matching ivory moiré slipcase moderately scuffed and hand-soiled.

First edition. Although the short title suggests that this work is primarily focused on dwarf trees, its subject matter is fairly wide ranging. The first chapters are concerned with fruit trees, particular attention being paid to espalier cultivation; but vines, bush fruits, melons, nurseries, pruning and other similar topics are also discussed. For the final 57 pages the focus shifts abruptly to flowers. Amaranths, pinks, tulips, primulas, ranunculus, anemones, and roses are given particular notice. There is a chapter on growing flowers in pots, and a concluding chapter on "la broderie des Jardins des Grands, & des ornemens de ces jardins." The book is dedicated to Jean de la Quintinie and reprints a short letter from him to Laurent in response.   Small 8vo (14.9 x 8.5 cm); (xxiv) + 142 pp.   Hunt 339.

75          MALLET, Robert Xavier.   BEAUTÉ DE LA NATURE, OU FLEURIMANIE RAISONÉE,   Concernant L'Art De Cultiver Les Oeillets, Ainsi Que Les Fleurs Du Premier & Second Ordre, Servant D'Ornemens Pour Les Parterres; Avec Une Dissertation Sur Les Arbrisseaux Choisis: Fondé Sur Une Longue Expérience.    Paris: Chez Didot le jeune,   1775.
Mallet was a florist and nurseryman from Dunkerque whose greatest enthusiasm, in keeping with the fashion of his day, was for carnations. His BEAUTÉ DE LA NATURE concerns itself first and foremost with these, devoting nearly half its text to their requirements and virtues. His view no doubt reflected the interests of his readers, for whom carnations were regarded as both the most desirable and most challenging flowers to grow. Once they were mastered, he felt that the secondary flowers (hyacinths foremost among them) could be easily grown. Other flowers "of the first order" given their own chapters were ranunculus, auricula and the tulip. He also includes a monthly gardener's calendar, several chapters on orangeries, and two chapters with advice on the laying out of parterres and "boulingrins." Of course, Mallet does not neglect, at the end, to advertise his nursery. There he offered to the public a variety of pinks in three classifications: the first for six francs per cutting, the second for three livres, and the third for thirty sous. In addition to these "Il se réserve en outre des espèces d'une beauté rare dont il ne marque pas les prix." Hyacinths, tulips, ranunculi, anemones, and auriculas were also available.   12mo (17 x 10.5 cm); iii-23 + 274 + (12) pp.
Bound in recent full-calf with red leather label and gilt spine ornaments.

76     (Malmaison)     HUBERT, Gérard et Nicole.   GARNEREY - VUES DE MALMAISON.      (Rueil Malmaison): Société Des Amis De Malmaison, n.d. ca.   1991.
A very handsome suite of reproductions of Auguste Garnerey's beautiful watercolors of the park at Malmaison as painted in the summer of 1812 or 1813 and showing the gardens in full bloom. These are accompanied by an introductory text regarding Garnerey, who was member of a distinguished family of Parisian-based artists and "peintre de cabinet" for Queen Hortense. It is theorized that Garnerey conceived of these views as "une promenade au cours d'une belle après-midi." The series of 12 watercolors begins with the facade of the château facing the park and proceeds to an overview of the park from the château, views of la bergerie, la vacherie, the basin of Neptune, a view towards the château from the lake, views of the wooden bridge on the river, Le Temple de l'Amour, a glimpse at the promenade of ladies of honor on the river, La Serre Chaude, the interior of the greenhouse, and, finally, a view of the salon within the greenhouse. A thirteenth plate, that of the interior of the music gallery at Malmaison is also included. The colophon tells us that the volume was meant to be accompanied by a separately printed view of Queen Hortense's salon at Augsbourg, but that is not present, nor is it referred to in the listing for this book in the Bibliothèque Nationale. Copy # 78 of 200 copies especially numbered and imprinted with the name of the original owner, from a total edition of 500 copies. No copies listed on OCLC.   Oblong album, 24 x 33 cm; 19 pp. + 13 mounted color plates reproducing watercolors, printed on heavy card stock and bound on stubs.
Original full red morocco with gilt title lettering on upper cover , decorative gilt border and spine, green silk moiré endpapers with gilt inner dentelles. A fine copy.

77          MANGLES, James.   THE FLORAL CALENDAR, MONTHLY AND DAILY.   With Miscellaneous Details Relative To Plants And Flowers, Gardens And Greenhouses, Horticulture And Botany, Aviaries, Etc.    London: Printed For Private Distribution,   1839.
First and only edition. This charming little volume offers much detailed information on the use of flowers for decorative effect inside the home as well as providing valuable lists of nurserymen and their specialties. Mangles draws from a variety of contemporary sources in addition to his own practical experience and gives a fascinating insight into the tastes and activities of the wealthy urban gardener of the early Victorian period. Of greatest interest here, however, are the twelve lovely color plates, including several which show the use of potted plants in window and exterior displays. Among the more striking illustrations are a section view of a conservatory showing a porcelain-fronted flower stand, a view of the conservatory from a decorated window, specimens of tiles for the facing of flower boxes, and a suggestion for a morning or breakfast room with an attached conservatory and aviary. The plates are delicately hand-finished with water colors and, in some cases, highlighted in gilt. They are finely executed and serve to illustrate early 19th century decorative art as well as gardening practice. Originally published for private distribution only, and consequently quite scarce. Some copies were also issued with only a few of the color plates.   16mo (15.8 x 9.7 cm); (iv) + xx + 156 pp. with wood-engraved text illustrations + 12 color plates.
Original morocco with gilt title device and floral decorations on front and back cover, recently skillfully rebacked in leather with raised bands; all edges gilt; light to moderate foxing on a few plates; two plates have mild stains in their margins. ***Presentation inscription at top of title page.

78          MAWSON, Thomas H.   THE ART & CRAFT OF GARDEN MAKING.      London: B. T. Batsford,   1901.
Second Edition. Mawson was probably the best known and most successful English landscape architect of his day. He was also among the most prominent figures in his profession also to be active in the Arts & Crafts movement. This is particularly notable since, unlike most of the key figures of that movement, Mawson's early training was received in a family nursery rather than an architect's office. The various editions of his ART & CRAFT OF GARDEN MAKING form an interesting record of an expanding career. From the beginning he chose to illustrate nearly all the points in his book by examples from his own practice. The full range of topics in formal landscape design is presented, from entrance ways, carriage courts and lawns to greenhouses, trellis work, the decorative treatment of water, and the choice of plant material. This is the second (of five) editions. It enlarges the first edition, which had been published only six months earlier. Many of the illustrations were drawn by the architect C.E. Mallows, another important figure in the development of the Arts & Crafts garden, especially by way of his numerous contributions to THE STUDIO. "Although little remains of Mallows built work, his renderings for schemes, both real and imaginary, distill the essence of architectural gardening at its best." (see: Tankard, GARDENS OF THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT, pp. 69-70). A third edition appeared in 1907, and two significantly revised and enlarged editions appeared after the war, but it is the pre-war editions which best reflect the Arts and Crafts character of Mawson's early work.   Small folio (31 x 21.5 cm); frontispiece + xx + 252 pp. with 178 illustrations from drawings, photographs and plans.
Original green cloth with gilt cover decoration; cloth slightly faded, but generally a well-preserved copy.
